Tough Day at Work
What a way to start the week? You'd think with single anchor and a skeleton crew, the day would be easy and laid back. The first hour of the morning show went fine, but the second hour was crazy for me as a floor director. My headset was running out of battery, so I went to go put it on the charger and grabbed the other headset (the headset was cordless phone) this was at the beginning of the second hour of the show. But for some reason, the 2nd headset, which was fully charged is not working. Every time I dial the extension, it was busy and there was a point where I heard the station's voice mail. As the robo opt tried to fix it, I was doing prompter and flooring without a headset, but I was following my rundown I just couldn't hear the director. After two blocks of no headset, I decided to go without a floor director and just sit at the prompter and use the headset there. That head set also failed me, so finished the third block (good thing it was a short block) without a headset. My last resort for a headset is the old heavy one, which also got its problems (its been refurbish several times). I thought I got lucky, its working and I can hear the director - all this time Scotty (the robo opt) is still trying to figure out what's wrong with the phone headsets. My last resort of a headset was working fine for two stories, then it died. Actually it was cutting in and out, I had to resort to using one of my hand to hold the antenna (once in awhile letting go to cue the anchor), my other hand holding the hand-held prompter, and the rundown I was holding with my teeth. Seriously!! So basically, for an hour, I was doing musical headset. It's crazy!!! By the time the noon show comes, thank goodness, I was able to use the phone headset.
